Batteries are something I find incredibly useful and interesting. Storing energy, in a convenient format for electrical input and output. While the material science behind them can be incredibly complex like modern Lithium Ion Cells, they can also be incredibly simple, like in Lead Acid. Single use batteries are silly to me, so I only focus on those that are rechargeable.
